Personal Property is assessed as of January 1 each year by the Commissioner of the Revenue.

 

The following types of Personal Property are taxed:

·         Motor Homes

·         Motorcycles

·         Trailers

·         Campers

·         Boats

·         Aircraft

·         Mobile Homes

·         Machinery & Tools

·         Business Personal Property

·         Merchants’ Capital

·         Personal Vehicles

·         Business Vehicles

 

Personal property includes aircraft, boats, cars, trucks, motorcycles, motor homes, mobile homes and trailers. Businesses also pay tax on personal property used in a trade, manufacturing or business, including but not limited to furniture, fixtures, machinery, tools, merchants capital and other equipment. Please see our Business Tab for more information regarding Business filings. According to the Code of Virginia, personal property when assessed for taxation must be assessed at fair market value. Annually, using pricing guides like the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) and tables, based on purchase prices and depreciation schedules, the Commissioner will assess thousands of items located in Lee County.
